A. INSTALLATION OF THE NEW RESEARCH EQUIPMENT
i. SHORT DESCRIPTION
The new research equipment, which consists of state of the art of power electronics converters, as well as D.C. and A.C. machines, has been successfully installed and operated. A part of it comprises the following:
- Inverters 5-10kW
- Active filters 5 -10kW
- Active front end converters 5 -10kW
- 4-quadrant choppers 5 -10kW
- C. Machines 7.5 -10kW
- C. Machines 7.5 -10kW
- Passive filters 5 -10kW
By using this equipment several systems can be implemented and emulated in the laboratory, among them:
- Ship’s Systems
- Complex electromechanical systems for power production or drive
- Hybrid car’s systems
- Electromechanical systems of aircrafts
- Wind Energy Conversion Systems
- Photovoltaic systems
It is worth noting that at the international level, the results of experiments and laboratory studies obtained within the range of 7.5-10 kW, are considered valid for the actual systems of the order of 1.5-5MW.
For the successful implementation of the above mentioned, there is a need for a thorough knowledge of the systems being studied, an excellent knowledge of the equipment used, and of course specific knowledge such as computer programming and microcontroller programming, in order to ensure that the behavior of the system under investigation is being replicated successfully in real time. The director and the staff of the laboratory are fully qualified to perform such investigations.

ii. EXTRA SPECIAL EQUIPMENT
In order for the research equipment to be operated at the maximum efficiency level and to implement even more complex systems, it was imperative to obtain the following:
- Special Voltage and Current Sensors
- Microcontrollers Development Boards
- PCI cards
- Orange PI & Raspberry, microcomputers capable of constituting small hyper computer systems for enhancing real time applications
- Industrial computers
A part of the extra special equipment is demonstrated below
Current Sensors of up to 1500 A capacity
dSPIC30F4011 &13 development board
Orange PI microcomputer
B. FIELDS OF ACTION
The statutory laboratory is capable of performing reliable investigations in the following fields of marine technology:
- Fault diagnosis
- Emulation of systems.
- Identification of parameters not provided by the manufacturers for the assessment of the actual performance of ship’s systems.
- Evaluation of systems performance.
The statutory laboratory is also capable of organizing:
- Seminars
- Short Cycle Courses
aiming to the training of personnel involved either in marine technology sector or in the energy production sector, dealing with in time fault diagnosis, operation procedures, rules observation, maintenance, e.t.c.
C. TRAINING ACTIVITIES
The director of the Laboratory has already trained students in the area of hybrid systems emulation (Ship systems, Hybrid Electric Vehicles e.t.c). The above students have been employed by the IAV company in Germany. Other students are now being trained on the embedded systems and on the development, programming and operation of small hyper computer systems and they are programmed to be employed by companies with interest in the area.
D. PUBLICATIONS
The outcome of the research activities of the Laboratory is already forwarded for publication to peer reviewed scientific journals & Conferences.
